In the winter of 2016, a journey to visit a loved one took a tragic and fatal turn for 19-year-old Daniel Torry. The young male from Harvey, Louisiana was driving through Alabama on his way to see his girlfriend in Tennessee when he made a stop in Tuscaloosa. Investigators believe that on January 13th, he pulled off the interstate with the intention of purchasing marijuana.
It was a decision that placed him in the path of two men whose intentions were far more sinister than a simple drug transaction.
In the parking lot of an apartment complex, what was supposed to be a quick exchange devolved into a robbery. Robert Lee Jones II and Orrin Cruckshank, the two men Torry met, robbed him of $200. During the commission of the robbery, Daniel Torry was shot and killed, his life cut short far from home. The hopes and plans he had were extinguished in a moment of violence, leaving a family to grieve and authorities to piece together the events that led to his senseless death.
The investigation into the murder led Tuscaloosa police to Jones and Cruckshank, who were subsequently arrested for their roles in the crime. The legal process that followed saw both men held accountable for their actions. Orrin Cruckshank pleaded guilty to felony murder and received a life sentence in prison. Later, Robert Lee Jones II also pleaded guilty to the same charge. In exchange for his plea, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a tragedy that ended a young man's journey and forever altered the lives of all involved.
