John Weston Horton, a 50-year-old male, was fatally shot on the morning of December 15, 2021, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at a Chevron gas station located on Joe Mallisham Parkway. Horton was a passenger in a vehicle when the shooting took place.
According to reports from the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, a woman who was driving the car reported that her passenger had been shot and was seriously injured.
She drove a short distance down the parkway before stopping to seek help. Horton was then transported to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, a suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cornelius Rashad Jones, turned himself in to the Tuscaloosa County Jail. Investigators determined that the motive for the shooting was related to a romantic relationship. Horton was reportedly in a relationship with Jones's ex-partner, the same woman who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident. Authorities believe that anger over this new relationship led to the fatal shooting. The female driver was not physically harmed during the attack.
Following his surrender, Cornelius Rashad Jones was arrested and has been charged with capital murder. He is being held without bond. The disposition of his case, including any trial or conviction, has not been made publicly available in online sources.
