Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, Ryan Gunning, who was 22 or 23 years old at the time, struck Brentson Skidmore in the head with a single punch. The blow was delivered without the use of any weapons, but its impact was devastating. Skidmore immediately collapsed and was rushed to DCH Regional Medical Center to be treated for a life-threatening brain injury that necessitated surgery. The entire altercation was witnessed by patrons at the bar and was also captured on surveillance video, providing clear evidence of the events that transpired.
Following the assault, law enforcement acted swiftly, and Ryan Gunning was arrested and initially charged with third-degree assault. He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and was later released on bond. Meanwhile, Brentson Skidmore's condition remained critical.
