In the early morning hours of June 29, 2024, a violent altercation on Stardust Drive in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, left one man dead and another injured. The deceased was identified as 51-year-old Reggie Coverson. The incident, which unfolded around 3:14 a.m., is being investigated as a possible case of self-defense.
According to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, the tragic events began when Coverson, identified as the initial aggressor, shot a 23-year-old man, causing non-life-threatening
injuries. In response to this, a third man, aged 36, intervened and fatally shot Coverson. Emergency services were called to the scene where they found two men with gunshot wounds. While the younger man was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, Coverson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple witnesses at the scene reportedly corroborated the account that Coverson instigated the violence. The 36-year-old man who shot Coverson was taken in for questioning. After a thorough investigation by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit and a review by the District Attorney's Office, it was determined that the shooting of Coverson appeared to be an act of self-defense.
As a result of these initial findings, no charges have been filed against the man who shot Coverson. The case is now set to be presented to a Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury for a comprehensive review to determine if any criminal charges are warranted. The 23-year-old who was initially shot by Coverson is reported to be in stable condition.
