A night out in downtown Tuscaloosa, Alabama, took a tragic turn, ending the life of 21-year-old Howell 'Hal' Booth Holland III on Saturday, July 27, 2024. The young man, a resident of Fayette, was in the city with a friend, enjoying the local clubs and bars. Their vehicle was parked at the Embassy Suites on University Boulevard, a location that would soon become a crime scene.
In the parking lot of the hotel, around 9:10 p.m., an argument erupted between Holland and his companion,
18-year-old Jackson Luke Overton of Winfield. The dispute escalated dramatically when Overton allegedly retrieved a firearm from a vehicle and fired a single shot at Holland. When officers from the Tuscaloosa Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Holland deceased. Initially, homicide was not suspected, but after interviewing numerous witnesses, investigators from the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit quickly identified Overton as the suspect.
Jackson Luke Overton was subsequently arrested and has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting. He is currently being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond under Aniah's Law. Authorities have indicated that neither Holland nor Overton were guests of the hotel and were only using the parking lot while they were downtown. The incident marked the 19th homicide investigated by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit in 2024.
