In the late spring of 1952, a tragedy unfolded in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, that would forever mark the community and its local law enforcement. On May 10th, Officer Homer F. Hubbard, a 50-year-old male, was engaged in the perilous duty of searching for a dangerous suspect. This individual was already wanted for a shooting that had occurred earlier in the day, adding a palpable tension to the manhunt.
Alongside his partner, Detective Foster King, Officer Hubbard pursued leads that brought
them to a secluded shack where they believed the fugitive was hiding. As the two officers approached the dwelling, their hope of a swift and safe apprehension was shattered. Gunfire erupted from the shack, striking both Hubbard and King. The sudden violence of the attack left little chance for survival, and both dedicated officers were fatally wounded at the scene. The weapon used in the heinous crime was a shotgun.
The aftermath of the deadly shooting set in motion a determined investigation to bring the person responsible to justice. The suspect, whose actions had taken the lives of two respected officers, was apprehended. The legal process that followed saw the individual tried and convicted for the murders of both Officer Hubbard and Detective King. In a conclusion to the grievous event, the convicted killer was executed for his crimes on January 22, 1954.
The loss of Officer Hubbard was deeply felt by his family and the community he served. He was survived by his wife and three daughters. In a lasting tribute to the fallen officers, the local Fraternal Order of Police lodge, constructed in 1953, was named in honor of both King and Hubbard, ensuring their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
