On September 16, 2019, 40-year-old Investigator Dornell Cousette of the Tuscaloosa Police Department was fatally shot while attempting to serve a warrant at a residence near the intersection of Short 17th Street and 33rd Avenue. The suspect, 20-year-old Luther Watkins Jr., was wanted for failing to appear on prior felony charges. Upon Cousette's arrival, Watkins fled into the house, leading to an exchange of gunfire inside.
