In May of 1954, Tuscaloosa Police Officer James C. Langford, a 40-year-old male, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He was survived by his wife and four-year-old son.
On the day of the incident, Officer Langford and his partner were dispatched to a club at the intersection of 20th Street and 30th Avenue. They were responding to a report of a man brandishing a pistol.
Upon entering the establishment, the officers were immediately met with gunfire. The suspect opened fire with an automatic pistol, fatally wounding Officer Langford.
The man responsible for Officer Langford's death was apprehended several days later in Toledo, Ohio. He was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and received a life sentence. Despite the severity of his crime, he was granted parole in 1980. However, his freedom was short-lived, as he was returned to prison in 1988 for violating the terms of his parole. He remained incarcerated until his death in prison on July 28, 2008.
