In the early evening of Thursday, March 30, 2023, the life of 37-year-old Rufus Tyrone Carter IV was tragically cut short on the streets of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Around 7:30 p.m., the sound of gunfire echoed in the 1800 block of Queen City Avenue, prompting calls to the Tuscaloosa Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a car that had wrecked two blocks away from the location of the reported shooting.
Inside the vehicle, they found Rufus Tyrone Carter IV suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Carter took a swift and unexpected turn when a man named Reginal Dawayne Peoples, 36 years old, walked into the Tuscaloosa Police Department headquarters. Peoples turned himself in to the authorities, confessing to his involvement in the shooting. Following an interrogation by investigators with the Violent Crimes Unit and an analysis of the evidence collected at the scene, Reginal Dawayne Peoples was officially charged with murder.
After being charged, Peoples was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail. In accordance with Aniah's Law, a decision was made by the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's Office to deny him bond, ensuring he would remain in custody as the legal process moved forward. Funeral services for Rufus Tyrone Carter IV, known to some as 'Boot,' were held on Saturday, April 8, 2023, as his family and friends gathered to mourn his untimely passing.
