In the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2023, the life of 26-year-old Deshawn Tanthony Eatmon, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The fatal incident unfolded around 2:20 a.m. at the Brookhaven Apartments located at 1310 James I. Harrison Jr. Parkway East. When Tuscaloosa Police officers arrived at the scene following reports of a shooting, they discovered Eatmon deceased.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit immediately launched an investigation into the
city's first homicide of the new year. Detectives processed the crime scene, gathered evidence, and conducted interviews with multiple witnesses. Their swift work led to the identification of a suspect in the shooting.
Later that same day, authorities arrested 37-year-old Michael Terrell Charles in connection with Eatmon's death. Charles was subsequently charged with one count of murder. He was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and held on a $1,000,000 bond. Officials have stated that this shooting was one of two separate homicides that occurred over the New Year's weekend in Tuscaloosa, but they do not believe the two incidents were related. Funeral services for Deshawn Eatmon were held on January 14, 2023, at Cornerstone Full Gospel Church, followed by his burial in Springhill Cemetery.
