On the first of May in 1993, the life of 21-year-old Dodson Sparman was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. On that day, Sparman and another young man, 18-year-old Ryan Cambridge, were both killed in a brazen daylight attack. The incident unfolded at the corner of St. Paul's Court and Ocean Avenue, where a gunman, perched on the handlebars of a moving bicycle pedaled by an associate, opened fire with a pistol in each hand.
The relentless spray of bullets not only claimed the lives of Sparman and Cambridge but also left two other individuals wounded, forever altering the lives of all involved.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a notorious and feared figure in the community, Richard Jameswhite, a man whose youthful appearance earned him the nickname "Babyface." At just 19 years old, Jameswhite was already a member of the Parkside Gang and had a reputation for extreme violence, which police believed was initially sparked by a desire for revenge after his brother's killing. Authorities stated that some of his alleged crimes were rooted in gang disputes and conflicts over drugs. Jameswhite's method in the May 1st shooting was particularly audacious, as he rode into the intersection and indiscriminately fired into a group of people, demonstrating a shocking disregard for human life.
For two years, Richard Jameswhite evaded capture, becoming a fugitive who was wanted in connection with at least five other homicides in Brooklyn and the wounding of several other people. His elusiveness was fueled, in part, by a belief that he was untouchable, having reportedly paid a witch doctor in Jamaica to make him invisible to his enemies and the police. His run from the law came to an end not in New York, but in DeKalb County, Georgia, on April 28, 1994. Following a minor traffic accident, an argument escalated, and Jameswhite shot and killed a man named Anthony Maclin. He was arrested after a foot chase and, along with his accomplice Devon Brown, was tried for the Georgia murder. In December 1994, both men were convicted of malice murder and sentenced to life in prison. While this conviction brought justice for the victim in Georgia, the numerous cases in Brooklyn, including the murder of Dodson Sparman, were never brought to trial. The legal proceedings in Georgia ultimately closed the chapter on Jameswhite's violent crime spree, but for the families of his New York victims, the lack of a specific trial and conviction for their loved ones' deaths left a void of judicial finality.
