Javon Angel Oyola, a 15-year-old boy from Norristown, Pennsylvania, died on Wednesday night, June 3, 2026, after a confrontation between two groups of teenagers turned into a fatal shooting. Javon was a ninth-grade student at Norristown Area High School, and what began as a series of fights among juveniles ended in Haws Alley off George Street, where police found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Paoli Hospital’s trauma center, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Investigators said the violence did not appear to be random. According to authorities, two groups of teens had met up multiple times that evening to fight, moving from place to place as police presence interrupted or disrupted the earlier confrontations. The third encounter happened near the 500 block of West Marshall Street and spilled into the area of Haws Alley. During that confrontation, one of the teens allegedly pulled out a gun and fired, striking Javon in the head. Detectives later recovered a. 40-caliber fired cartridge casing and a. 40-caliber live round from the scene.
The shooting shook the Norristown community and the school district. Javon was remembered by family and friends as energetic, funny, athletic, and deeply loved. He played football and basketball, enjoyed fishing, biking, swimming, riding scooters, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. His obituary described him as someone with a bright smile, a generous spirit, and a personality that lifted people around him. He also had interests in barbering, health and nutrition, and learning electrical work from his uncle. Friends reportedly knew him by the nickname “Shmeat.”
Authorities arrested 16-year-old Alex Herrera of Norristown in connection with Javon’s death. Police said video from the area showed the alleged gunman running away after the shooting with what appeared to be an object tucked into his waistband. Investigators also found a cellphone left behind at the scene and said it helped connect Herrera to the shooting. Herrera was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor, and possession of an instrument of crime.
Officials said Herrera was also a Norristown Area High School student. The case was handled by Norristown police and Montgomery County detectives, with prosecutors describing the shooting as the deadly outcome of an ongoing dispute between juveniles rather than a random act. After Javon’s death, Norristown Area High School moved to virtual learning, and the community gathered for a balloon release in his memory.
Javon’s funeral services were scheduled for June 18, 2026, at Zion AME Church in Norristown, followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery and a repast at the George Washington Carver Community Center. His death left behind grieving parents, siblings, extended family, classmates, teammates, and friends mourning a life cut short in a moment of gun violence.
