In the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, a Monday morning was shattered by gunfire that ended the life of 40-year-old Edwin Guevarez Jr. The fatal encounter unfolded around 9:10 a.m. on March 30, 2026, near Wortman Avenue and Ashford Street, just steps from Guevarez's home and close to the Jerome Playground. Guevarez, a father of 10, was reportedly shot in the chest and right leg.
Emergency responders rushed him to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The assailant, who fled the scene on foot, was described by police as wearing a ski mask, a blue hooded sweatshirt, gray jeans, and multicolored Jordans. At the time of the incident, no arrests had been made, and the motive for the shooting remained unclear. Investigators recovered a single shell casing from the sidewalk, suggesting Guevarez may have been shot at close range.
According to his wife, Guevarez had an ongoing dispute with some neighbors. Police sources also revealed that Guevarez had a history of arrests, with more than 20 over the last decade. His most recent arrest was in September for drug possession with intent to sell, and he was due back in court in May. The investigation into his death is ongoing, and as of early April 2026, no suspects had been publicly identified or taken into custody.
