In the early morning hours of February 20, 2026, a beloved Black / African American middle school basketball coach, 39-year-old Derious "Coach DJ" Johnson, was shot and killed in Huntington, West Virginia. The incident, which also claimed the life of his 26-year-old brother, Adrian Phillips, and injured a third individual, unfolded in a parking lot on 14th Street.
