In the heart of a Birmingham, Alabama evening on January 10, 2026, the life of 18-year-old Brandon McNeal Campbell was tragically cut short. A senior at Pleasant Grove High School with a future gleaming with promise, Campbell was fatally wounded in a shooting that also left his best friend, 17-year-old Sam Slaughter, injured. The two friends were together in a car on Tuscaloosa Avenue when they were targeted in what authorities believe was a robbery gone wrong.
Despite his injuries, Campbell managed to drive a short distance in an attempt to reach a family member for help before crashing their vehicle. When emergency responders arrived, Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene. Slaughter, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The senseless act of violence that claimed a young life and forever altered another sent ripples of grief and outrage through the community. In the days that followed, a balloon release was held at Pleasant Grove High School to honor the memory of a student described as being full of life, laughter, and joy. Friends, family, and school officials gathered to share memories and offer comfort, a testament to the positive impact Campbell had on those around him. In a swift response to the tragic shooting, the Birmingham Police Department announced the arrests of five individuals in connection with the case. The suspects were identified as 27-year-old Algie Eugene Surrell Jr., 19-year-old Kavari Wells, and 22-year-old Ricco Wells. Alongside the adult suspects, two 17-year-old juveniles were also taken into custody. The charges brought against them were severe, reflecting the gravity of the crime. Surrell and Kavari Wells were both charged with capital murder. Ricco Wells and one of the teenage suspects faced charges of capital murder and attempted murder, while the second juvenile was charged with felony murder. Following their arrests, all five suspects were being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail.
