In the Ensley community of Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Tre’Von Nyheim Douglas was tragically cut short on February 15, 2025. A young man on the cusp of fatherhood, he was looking forward to the birth of his first child, a son to be named after him. His family’s excitement for the new arrival turned to anguish when Douglas was found shot to death in the backyard of a vacant house on the 1400 block of 33rd Street.
The discovery was made after neighbors reported hearing
a loud bang around 4:30 p.m. Upon investigating the sound, they found Douglas unresponsive and immediately called 911. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead at 4:46 p.m. The incident marked the 16th homicide in Birmingham that year, adding to the community's growing concerns about violent crime.
In the wake of his death, Douglas's mother, Sheree Hayes, expressed her profound grief, describing him as her 'baby' who was not involved in street life. The family had moved to Birmingham from South Carolina in 2018, and Douglas had been working detailing cars while living in Bessemer. Just hours before his death, he had been in contact with his mother and girlfriend. His mother believes robbery was the motive, as his cell phone and cash were missing when he was found.
As of now, the Birmingham Police Department's investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities have not released any details regarding a possible motive.
