On August 31, 2022, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 7500 block of 66th Street South in Birmingham, Alabama. Upon arrival, they discovered 20-year-old Derrell Lamont Willis lying unresponsive in an alleyway on 67th Courtway South, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Willis was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
