On January 14, 2024, at approximately 12:16 a.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 4200 block of 39th Avenue North. Upon arrival, they discovered 15-year-old Markell Sanders unresponsive inside his residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services pronounced him deceased at the scene.
