In the Calvert Square neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia, a series of gunshots broke the evening calm on October 30, 2025. When police responded to the 800 block of E. Olney Road at approximately 5:22 p.m., they discovered a man suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The man, identified as 56-year-old John L. Howard Sr., a male resident of Norfolk, was urgently transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly developed, and within days, authorities identified a suspect. On the following Sunday, Newport News police conducted a traffic stop and took 43-year-old Alicia D. Carney into custody in connection with Howard's death.
Following her arrest, Carney was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and felonious assault/malicious wounding. She is currently being held without bond at the Newport News City Jail. The circumstances that led to the fatal shooting have not been publicly released by authorities as the investigation continues.
