In the early hours of July 20, 2025, a young Black/African American man, 21-year-old Airman Brayden Lovan, lost his life in a tragic incident at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Lovan, who hailed from Greenville, Kentucky, was a defender assigned to the 90th Security Forces Squadron and had been on his first assignment since entering active duty in November 2023. His death, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. while he was on duty, was the result of a gunshot wound from an M18 service pistol.
The incident was not a hostile act but rather a purported joke gone horribly wrong. Fellow airman Marcus White-Allen pointed his Sig Sauer M18 pistol at Lovan's chest in what was described as a "joking manner." The firearm discharged, fatally wounding Lovan. In the immediate aftermath, a cover-up was initiated by White-Allen, who instructed two other airmen present, Sarbjot Badesha and Matthew Rodriguez, to provide false statements about what had transpired. He allegedly told them to claim that the gun went off accidentally when he slammed his duty belt on a desk.
This initial deception hindered the investigation, leading authorities to at first believe the death was due to an accidental discharge of the firearm, a model that had faced scrutiny for such issues. This prompted the Air Force Global Strike Command to temporarily suspend the use of the M18 pistol. However, the investigation progressed, and the truth eventually came to light. In early August, an arrest was made in connection with Lovan's death. Airman 1st Class Marcus White-Allen was taken into custody and was facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and making a false official statement.
The two other airmen, Badesha and Rodriguez, later pleaded guilty to making false official statements. Badesha was sentenced to 30 days in confinement, a reduction in rank, and forfeiture of pay, while Rodriguez received a sentence of 10 days confinement, 15 days restriction to base, a reduction in rank, and forfeiture of pay. In a final, somber twist to the case, the primary suspect, Marcus White-Allen, was found dead on the base on October 8, 2025. The investigation into the cause of his death remains ongoing.
