On a late summer afternoon, the life of 20-year-old Hunter Andrew Bates was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence on Interstate 85 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. On August 28, 2025, at approximately 3:47 p.m., the northbound lanes of the interstate near the five-mile marker became the scene of a fatal shooting. Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene after his Honda Civic was found in a culvert off the right side of the road.
A female passenger in the vehicle was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later released.
The Virginia State Police quickly launched an investigation into the shooting death of the young man from Colonial Heights. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, 19-year-old Jason Allen Glidewell II of Bracey. A public alert was issued, describing Glidewell as 'armed and dangerous' and seeking information on his whereabouts. Warrants were obtained for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police also released information about the suspect's vehicle, a silver 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, which was located the day before his arrest.
The manhunt for Glidewell concluded on the evening of September 3, 2025, when he turned himself in to authorities. An acquaintance of Glidewell contacted the Virginia State Police to arrange for his surrender. With the assistance of the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office and the Town of Alberta Police Department, Glidewell was taken into custody without incident. He is currently being held without bond at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta. In addition to the charges related to Hunter's death, Glidewell also faced unrelated misdemeanor charges of assault and battery in Nottoway County. Court proceedings for the charges in connection with the fatal shooting were scheduled to begin in October.
