Hunter A. Bates, a 20-year-old white male from Colonial Heights, Virginia, died on August 28, 2025, after a shooting along Interstate 85 in Mecklenburg County near the Virginia–North Carolina line. At approximately 3:47 p.m., troopers responding to reports of gunfire and a crash found a Honda Civic that had veered off the northbound lanes near mile marker 5 and come to rest in a culvert.
