In the early morning hours of a Sunday in Pageland, South Carolina, a tragic series of events unfolded that ended the life of 9-year-old Brody Langley. On September 28, 2025, the young boy was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Blue Sky Mart gas station. Investigators determined that Brody's parents, Raven Nicole Deese and James Franklin Langley, had brought him to a pre-arranged fight between a teenage family friend and another youth over a girl.
As one of the vehicles was attempting to leave the scene, shots were fired from the other car, and Brody was struck in the crossfire.
The aftermath of the shooting resulted in the arrest of eleven individuals, a mix of adults and juveniles. Brody's parents, Raven Deese, 35, and James Langley, 37, faced a dozen charges each, including homicide by child abuse and unlawful neglect of a child. Two other adults, 28-year-old James Allen Jordan and 17-year-old Bryson Deese, were charged with murder. Bryson Deese, who is being tried as an adult, was also charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 18. Authorities stated that Bryson Deese brought a handgun to the intended fistfight, which he then dropped. Another juvenile allegedly picked up the weapon and fired the shot that killed Brody.
In addition to the adults, seven juveniles, with ages ranging from 13 to 16, faced charges. Five of these young people were charged with murder and assault and battery by mob resulting in death, among other offenses. Another 14-year-old was charged with assault and battery resulting in death. Initially, a judge denied bond for the four adult suspects and all the juvenile defendants. However, Bryson Deese was later granted a $100,000 bond. The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office emphasized that it remains unclear who fired the fatal shot, but under state law, all involved can be held responsible. In response to the violence, local officials began considering a county-wide curfew for teenagers. Friends and family gathered to say their final goodbyes to Brody Langley at a graveside service on October 2, 2025.
