In the small town of Pageland, South Carolina, a community gathering turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of two families. On July 18, 2025, at the annual Pageland Watermelon Festival, 17-year-old Sean Avery Davis, a male, was fatally shot. A rising senior and a dedicated athlete at Central High School, he was known for his hard work and respectful demeanor.
He was a prominent player on the school's football team, wearing the number five, and also excelled in track.
The festive atmosphere of the annual summer event was shattered by a verbal altercation that tragically escalated. Following the dispute, another 17-year-old, Jayden Jeremiah Jefferies, reportedly shot Sean Davis multiple times with a. 22 caliber handgun. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as festival-goers scattered after hearing the gunshots. First responders rushed Davis to a trauma center, but he succumbed to his injuries en route. The remainder of the festival was canceled in the wake of the shooting.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Jayden Jeremiah Jefferies was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Due to the severity of the charges, he is being charged as an adult under South Carolina law. Authorities reported that Jefferies admitted to the shooting and to discarding the firearm after fleeing the scene. The community of Pageland mourned the loss of the young athlete, with friends, teammates, and family gathering for vigils to remember his life. His mother, Sharonda Davis, expressed her profound grief but also conveyed a message of forgiveness towards the young man accused of taking her son's life, calling for an end to youth violence.
