In the late afternoon of August 11, 2018, tragedy struck in the small town of Pageland, South Carolina, forever altering the lives of one family. Debias Tyrese Pate, an 18-year-old Black male, found himself in the midst of a heated confrontation on North Elm Street. As the situation escalated and individuals began to flee the scene, the air was pierced by the sound of gunfire.
In the chaos that ensued, a bullet found its mark, and Pate fell, fatally wounded.
Emergency services were summoned to the scene just before 5:15 p.m., finding the young man with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Monroe, North Carolina, in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Debias Tyrese Pate was pronounced dead at the hospital, his future cut tragically short. The Pageland Police Department, recognizing the gravity of the situation, called in the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to assist in the homicide investigation.
The investigation into Pate's death moved swiftly in the initial stages. In the days following the shooting, the Pageland Police Department announced a significant development in the case: the arrest of 22-year-old Quinntavious Lockhart. He was taken into custody and formally charged with murder in connection with the death of Debias Pate.
