In the early evening of October 2, 2025, the life of 23-year-old Gerald L. Bogan III, a Black male from East Liberty, was tragically cut short in Pittsburgh's Hill District. Just before 7 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the air, triggering a three-round ShotSpotter alert that drew Pittsburgh police to the 600 block of Perry Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Bogan with at least one gunshot wound to his chest.
Emergency responders acted quickly, transporting the critically
injured young man to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Gerald Bogan III succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his identity.
The investigation into the homicide, led by the city's Violent Crime Unit, swiftly identified a suspect. The day after the fatal shooting, Pittsburgh Public Safety officials announced the arrest of 18-year-old Dontae Lewis of Pittsburgh. Lewis was taken into custody and transported to the Allegheny County Jail. He is facing serious charges, including criminal homicide, carrying a firearm without a license, and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the death of Gerald Bogan III. A preliminary hearing for Lewis was scheduled for October 17.
