In the early morning hours of the Fourth of July weekend in 2020, violence shattered the quiet of a Pittsburgh neighborhood, leaving a family and community to mourn a life cut short. Keith D. Byrd, a 34-year-old Black male, was discovered lying in the street on the 100 block of Shetland Street in Larimer, suffering from gunshot wounds. The call to police came in around 4 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2020.
First responders rushed Keith to a local hospital in critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:58 a.m. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was gunshot wounds and officially ruled his death a homicide.
Known to friends and family as a great, positive father and role model who was always smiling and full of joy, Keith's death was a significant loss to those who knew him. He was remembered as someone who loved to dance and listen to music.
In the wake of the shooting, the investigation into Keith D. Byrd's death began. However, the search for those responsible has proven to be a difficult one. As of early 2021, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the case. The investigation into his murder continues.
