Shannon Kelsey, an 18-year-old Black man, was caught in a sudden burst of violence in the Longwood section of the Bronx on the afternoon of July 8, 2025. Just before 4 p.m., a 911 call brought police to Southern Boulevard near Westchester Avenue for what was first described as an assault in progress, the kind of street confrontation that can look like one thing from a distance and become something else entirely once it reaches a breaking point.
Businesses along the block were busy in broad daylight when the fighting spilled out; by the time officers arrived, Kelsey was down with a deep chest wound, and nearby a younger boy had been cut in the face. In the confusion of the first frantic minutes, early reports described a shooting, and some witnesses believed they’d heard multiple shots, but investigators later said Kelsey had been stabbed in the chest, the blade piercing his heart.
The corner itself became a frantic scene—people running for cover, shouting, and pressing into storefronts while first responders worked in the open. Kelsey collapsed near the entrances and display stands that crowd the sidewalk there, and blood pooled where he fell as officers and firefighters tried to keep him alive long enough to reach the hospital. He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead. The other teen—reported as 15 years old—suffered a laceration to the lip and was taken to another hospital in stable condition. Amid the same chaos, a man later identified as Travis Profit arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his left leg; investigators said he had been shot during the melee by an unknown gunman who fled and, as of later updates, had not been identified.
As detectives pieced together what set the violence in motion, law-enforcement sources described the confrontation as beginning with an alleged attempted robbery. Investigators believed a group of teenagers tried to rob Profit, who was alleged to have been selling drugs at the time, and that the clash escalated into a chase when Profit ran after them. Police said the confrontation ended with Profit allegedly stabbing Kelsey and slashing the younger teen, while the gunfire that wounded Profit came from someone else still at large. In the days after, the case hardened from street rumors into an arrest: police questioned Profit and charged him in connection with Kelsey’s death.
On July 11, police arrested Travis Profit, 38, and filed a sweeping set of charges: murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, three counts of assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation did not stop with that arrest. Police later asked for the public’s help identifying an additional suspect tied to the stabbing incident—described as bald with a medium complexion and large build, last seen wearing a gray tank top and blue shorts, and believed by police sources to be known to Profit. Separately, the person who shot Profit during the brawl was also still unidentified in subsequent updates, leaving open questions about how many people joined in once the fight turned into a three-victim bloodbath at that crowded Bronx intersection.
