On a warm evening in September 2020, the lives of two women were tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on a porch in Northeast Baltimore. Michelle Green, a 23-year-old Black female, and her friend, 46-year-old Julie Rice, were socializing with three other women on the 2800 block of Clifton Park Terrace when a neighbor, Dandre Woods-Bethel, emerged from his home and confronted them.
According to prosecutors, Woods-Bethel demanded that the women leave the area, telling them to 'clear
the block'. After a brief exchange, he went back into his house, only to return with a handgun. Without further warning, he opened fire on the group of women. Both Michelle Green and Julie Rice were struck by the bullets. The other three women on the porch at the time were also shot at but managed to escape without injury.
Baltimore Police responded to a report of the shooting at approximately 6:45 p.m. and found both Green and Rice suffering from gunshot wounds. The two women were rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital, but both ultimately succumbed to their injuries. In a strange turn of events, after the shooting, Woods-Bethel himself called 911 to report the incident before surrendering to the police who had arrived at the scene. He was arrested without incident.
During the investigation, police recovered four 9mm shell casings from the scene. While in custody and awaiting his interview, Dandre Woods-Bethel made several incriminating statements, reportedly saying, 'I should have used hollow points,' and also claiming he didn't mean to harm the women and was trying to protect his family. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and multiple handgun-related offenses.
Following a lengthy legal process, Dandre Woods-Bethel was found guilty on all charges after a bench trial. In August 2025, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, plus an additional 28 years in prison for the murders of Michelle Green and Julie Rice, and the attempted murders of the other three women on the porch that day, ensuring he would not be able to threaten others in the community again.
