On the morning of Monday, September 8, 2025, police officers in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to the 3200 block of Independence Avenue following a call for service described as a medical emergency of unknown nature. The victim, identified as 50-year-old Derek Harrison, a Black male, showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

However, the nature of the case shifted two days later on Wednesday, September 10, when the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office completed their examination. The findings revealed that Harrison had sustained wounds consistent with being struck by gunfire, prompting authorities to reclassify the incident as a homicide.
