Cameron Smith, 33, a Black/African American male from Lanham, Maryland, spent the evening of May 19, 2025 in a stretch of Lanham Severn Road that would soon turn chaotic. At about 8:20 p.m., Prince George’s County officers were sent to the 9300 block after reports of gunfire. They found Smith struck multiple times, bleeding heavily at the scene, and rushed him to a hospital. He died a short time later.
A second person was also shot in the same incident and survived, with police describing the injuries as serious in the early hours of the case.
In the first public updates, detectives said the shooting did not appear random and they worked to identify who pulled the trigger and why. The case moved quickly from uncertainty toward a clearer outline: investigators came to believe the gunfire erupted from a dispute, the kind of confrontation that escalates in seconds and leaves an aftermath that can’t be reversed.
Just over a week later, homicide detectives announced an arrest. Police identified Kyon Adams, 25, of Lanham as the suspect and charged him with first-degree murder and related offenses. Investigators said their preliminary findings indicated Smith was shot during a dispute, and they confirmed a second victim had been wounded as well, with injuries ultimately not considered life-threatening. Adams was reported to be held in the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
