In the late winter of 2016, a violent altercation on Greenbelt Road in Lanham, Maryland, set in motion a tragedy that would take over a year and a half to reach its conclusion. On February 29, 2016, Ki Johnson, an 18-year-old male, was shot after getting into an argument with another man. The single gunshot wound inflicted injuries that would profoundly affect the course of his young life.
For more than a year, Johnson lived with the consequences of that day.
Then, on October 10, 2017, he was admitted to a hospital with breathing difficulties. His condition deteriorated, and he died later that day. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner would later conduct an autopsy and, in February 2018, ruled his death a homicide. The cause was determined to be the lingering and severe injuries he had sustained in the shooting nearly 20 months prior.
Following the medical examiner's ruling, the Prince George's County Police Department officially took over the investigation, classifying it as a homicide. At the time, authorities indicated that they had strong leads in the case and did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence. They publicly appealed for anyone with information to come forward to assist in their investigation. However, despite the initial expressions of confidence from law enforcement, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years that have followed. The case of who shot Ki Johnson remains unresolved.
