In a grim discovery on August 6, 2010, four-year-old Shakur Sylvester Sikyala was found murdered in Lanham, Maryland. The young boy was discovered alongside his three-year-old sister, Shayla Shante Sikyala, their 38-year-old mother, Dawn Yvette Brooks, and their 41-year-old paternal aunt, Mwasiti Sikyala. All four victims had been shot to death in what police described as a 'senseless, cowardly act.'
The family was living in a squalid apartment above a detached garage, a space filled
with trash and lacking basic amenities like running water or a toilet. The deplorable conditions of the makeshift apartment were so severe that they initially hampered the police investigation. It was within this bleak setting that the horrific events unfolded, cutting short the lives of two young children and two women.
The investigation quickly led to two suspects from Texas, 43-year-old Darrell Lynn Bellard and 18-year-old Tkeisha Nicole Gilmer. Authorities stated that the murders were not random but were the result of a 'drug relationship that went very bad.' The motive appeared to be a dispute over the sale of marijuana, with Bellard and Gilmer described as being connected to the adult victims through this illicit trade. Investigators believe a disagreement over drug debts culminated in the execution-style slayings.
Bellard and Gilmer were promptly arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder each. During the subsequent legal proceedings, a Prince George's County jury convicted Darrell Lynn Bellard on four counts of first-degree murder for his role in the killings, which were prompted by the disappearance of 60 pounds of marijuana. Following his conviction, prosecutors sought a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
