In the early evening of July 1, 2023, a violent encounter in a parking lot in Lanham, Maryland, cut short the life of 31-year-old Malcolm Maurice Bradley of Washington, D.C. Authorities responded to a call about a shooting on Good Luck Road shortly after 5:30 p.m. and discovered Bradley suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.
At the time of the incident, police had not identified a suspect and were working to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting, though they stated preliminarily that they did not believe it was a random act.
The investigation into Bradley's death unfolded over the following months, revealing a tragic story of a pre-arranged meeting that turned deadly. It was determined that Bradley had gone to the Lanham apartment complex believing he was going to sell marijuana to a group of individuals. Unbeknownst to him, the encounter was a setup. As his girlfriend and two young children waited in his car, a teenager opened fire, shooting Bradley multiple times.
The subsequent police work led to the arrest of Dane Gayle, a 19-year-old from Bladensburg. Surveillance video of the murder played a crucial role in the case against him, helping to convince a jury of his guilt. Prosecutors revealed the motive was not a drug deal, but a robbery, as the teens did not have any money to purchase the marijuana.
In February 2024, a Prince George's County jury convicted Dane Gayle of murder for the killing of Malcolm Bradley. During the trial, it was brought to light that Gayle, who was 17 at the time of a previous offense, had been charged as an adult in a 2022 attempted carjacking case, but the case was ultimately handled in the juvenile system. Following his murder conviction, Gayle faces the possibility of a life sentence in prison, with his sentencing scheduled for the end of May.
