In the quiet town of Cambridge, Maryland, the life of 45-year-old Steven Lee Dennis was abruptly cut short on the evening of June 25, 2025. A skilled carpenter and construction subcontractor, he was known for his kind and intelligent nature, always ready to lend a hand to friends and family. That tragic Wednesday, however, he found himself the victim of a fatal act of violence.
At approximately 8:37 p.m., Cambridge Police Department officers were dispatched to the vicinity of the West
Side Bypass and Route 343 following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Steven Lee Dennis lying in the roadway with a single gunshot wound to his upper chest. A civilian and an off-duty police officer were already at the scene, performing life-saving measures. Despite their efforts and the continued attempts by the responding officers and Dorchester County EMS, Dennis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly began, with authorities noting that a passenger car was seen leaving the area shortly after the incident. Their efforts led them to identify 18-year-old Damarion Tyron Sampson of Cambridge as a person of interest. Just two days later, on June 27, 2025, Sampson was located and arrested without incident on an unrelated warrant for a recent armed robbery. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered a handgun and a vehicle suspected to be connected to the homicide.
While initially detained on the robbery charges, the investigation into Dennis's death continued. On July 9, 2025, detectives from the Cambridge Police Department formally charged Damarion Tyron Sampson with the murder of Steven Lee Dennis. The charges brought against him were extensive, including first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Sampson remains in custody at the Dorchester County Detention Center, held without bond as he awaits legal proceedings. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man remembered for his vibrant spirit and generous nature, a life taken too soon in a senseless act of violence.
