In the late afternoon of a Tuesday in Cambridge, Maryland, the sound of gunshots pierced the air in the vicinity of Wood Street and Fairmount Avenue, prompting a police response. It was shortly after 3 p.m. on September 20, 2022, when officers from the Cambridge Police Department arrived to investigate the reports. Their search of the area led them to a grim discovery in a wooded area along the 600 block of Edgewood Avenue: the body of a young man who had been fatally shot.
The victim
was identified as 20-year-old Kevin Dwayne Raeford of Salisbury, Maryland. The Cambridge Police Department secured the scene and the investigation was handed over to the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit. Raeford's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy confirmed his death as a homicide. Investigators believe that the shooting was a targeted incident and that there was no broader threat to the community.
The investigation into Raeford's death progressed, and on September 30, 2022, an arrest was made. Geett Cornish, a 30-year-old resident of Cambridge, was taken into custody in Annapolis by the Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team and the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Cornish faced a multitude of charges in connection with Raeford's murder, including first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and multiple firearms offenses. These charges also included the use of a firearm in a felony, illegal possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment, illegal possession of a handgun in a vehicle, and illegal possession of ammunition.
