On the evening of the Fourth of July in 2022, tragedy struck in Cambridge, Maryland, ending the life of 24-year-old Tyuane Johnson Jr.. Shortly before 9:00 p.m., officers from the Cambridge Police Department were dispatched to the 1000 block of Cosby Lane following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Johnson lying on the ground, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Dorchester General Hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner would later confirm that his death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the death of Tyuane Johnson, a graduate of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School who had recently opened his own shoe store, was extensive and led by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies. The collaborative effort resulted in a series of arrests in the weeks and months that followed. In total, at least eleven individuals were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting, facing a range of serious charges.
Among the first to be arrested were Deondray Stanford, 22, of Cambridge, who was charged with first-degree murder, and three other men: Dominic Savage, 32, of Cambridge; Rahkeem Beck, 25, of Easton; and Isaiah Handy, 23, of Grasonville. They faced charges including reckless endangerment and various firearm offenses. As the investigation progressed, more suspects were identified and apprehended.
Further arrests included Lawar Turner, 21, of Ridgely; Markeem Turner, 24, of Denton; and Candre Meekins, 26, of Cambridge, who were charged with offenses such as attempted first-degree murder and assault. Two other Cambridge residents, Naa'il Thompson, 22, and Devon Cannon, 26, were also arrested on firearm-related charges. The tenth and eleventh suspects to be arrested were 19-year-old Dadrian Dobson of Seaford and 18-year-old Zakai Curtis of Easton, both of whom were charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, among other offenses. The investigation has been described as ongoing, with the possibility of additional arrests.
