In the quiet town of Cambridge, Maryland, the life of 34-year-old Sharod Ileak Mack came to a violent end on January 30, 2018. On that Tuesday afternoon, police were dispatched to his home on Wood Duck Drive, where they discovered a grim scene. Upstairs, Mack was found deceased in his bed, having sustained two gunshot wounds to the head. The discovery was made after a 911 call led authorities to the residence.

Downstairs, officers found Lasonya Corinne Sargent, Mack's 39-year-old girlfriend with whom he lived, suffering from a gunshot wound to her chest. Sargent was transported to a hospital for medical treatment and was subsequently taken into police custody upon her release on February 6, 2018. The investigation that followed painted a tragic picture of domestic turmoil. It was revealed that Sargent was unhappy with Mack's infidelity, particularly after learning that he had impregnated another woman and was planning to leave her.

Following an investigation by the Cambridge Police Department and the Dorchester County State's Attorney's Office, which included the collection of forensic evidence and interviews with Sargent, she was charged with first and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and firearm offenses. Despite her own injuries, authorities were confident they had enough probable cause to identify her as the perpetrator in Mack's death. While Sargent initially claimed that two intruders were responsible for the events that transpired, evidence presented during her trial, including her DNA on the weapon found at the scene, pointed to her culpability.

In August 2018, Lasonya Sargent's case went to trial. Over the course of five days, the prosecution laid out its case against her. The jury ultimately found her guilty on all counts, including first-degree murder. On October 25, 2018, a judge sentenced Sargent to life in prison for the murder of Sharod Mack, with an additional 20 years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime, bringing a close to a case that had shaken the community.
