In the quiet community of Clover, South Carolina, a fatal encounter unfolded on May 3, 2024, leading to the death of 51-year-old Stephen Roger Stowe. A resident of Clover and a graduate of Ashbrook High School, Stowe was a man who enjoyed hunting, the beach, and spending time with his dogs. His life was cut short following a heated argument on Enon Church Road, a dispute that tragically escalated to gunfire.
The incident marked the first homicide in unincorporated York County for the year.
The investigation quickly identified two individuals, Mitchell Strickland, 38, and his wife, Shelby Jeanette Strickland, 32, as the suspects. Authorities revealed that Stowe and the Stricklands were acquaintances who lived in separate homes on the same property where the shooting occurred. Following the altercation, the couple fled the scene, prompting a search that extended beyond state lines. Their flight from the law was brief, as they were apprehended in Randolph County, North Carolina, during a traffic stop.
Following their arrest, the Stricklands were held in the Randolph County Detention Center before being extradited back to York County to face charges. Mitchell Strickland was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. His wife, Shelby, faced a charge of accessory after the fact to murder. In a later development, Mitchell Strickland pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with Stowe's death and received a 30-year prison sentence.
