In the early morning hours of July 19, 2025, a fatal shooting on the northwest side of Indianapolis claimed the life of 42-year-old Sabrina Nicole Harbert. The incident occurred just before 3 a.m. in the 5500 block of Georgetown Road, outside a liquor store. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Harbert unresponsive in the parking lot.
She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.
An investigation into the shooting led to the swift arrest of 25-year-old Maurice Howard. At the scene, police found Howard kneeling with his hands up, stating, 'I'm right here, I'm right here.' Howard, who was identified as Harbert's boyfriend, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and unlawful possession of a handgun.
According to witness statements and surveillance footage, an argument between Howard and Harbert preceded the deadly shooting. One witness reported seeing Howard 'snatching up' Harbert and hearing him threaten to kill her. The argument allegedly began after Howard broke the key fob to Harbert's car. The video evidence reportedly showed both individuals yelling and pushing each other before Harbert began to walk away. It was at this point that Howard allegedly shot her in the back and continued to fire even after she had fallen. Howard later claimed to police that Harbert had repeatedly hit him, but investigators found no evidence to support this beyond the mutual shoving seen on the surveillance video.
