In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, the life of 22-year-old Daniel Guzman Jr., a Hispanic male from Dover, Delaware, was tragically cut short in a barrage of gunfire. The incident unfolded at approximately 12:42 a.m. in the 400 block of Barrister Place, where a group of individuals had gathered in front of a residence. Without warning, multiple suspects opened fire on the group, shattering the night with the sound of gunshots.
When Dover Police officers arrived at the
scene, they discovered Guzman suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. First responders rendered aid at the scene before he was rushed to Bayhealth Kent Campus for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Daniel Guzman Jr. succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The violence of that night also left four other men from Dover wounded. Their injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body. These individuals were transported to the hospital by either ambulance or private vehicles.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chaotic scene where at least three separate groups of people were firing at each other. In the weeks that followed, the Dover Police Department diligently pursued leads to bring those responsible to justice. Their efforts led to a breakthrough on July 2, 2025, with the arrest of 20-year-old Makhai Miller of Dover. Miller was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony and Reckless Endangering First Degree.
While Miller was identified as a participant who discharged a handgun during the incident, authorities have been clear that they are still working to identify the individual directly responsible for Daniel Guzman Jr.'s death. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to analyze evidence and work with the Delaware Department of Justice to ensure that justice is served for Guzman and his family. Miller was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $66,000 cash bail. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released, and police continue to seek information from the public.
