LaVentrice Denise Tolbert, a 40-year-old Black woman, died on September 24, 2025, in a tragic murder-suicide in Birmingham, Alabama. Her life was cut short by her boyfriend, 35-year-old Tony DeWayne Davis, in an act of domestic violence that concluded a long-term abusive relationship.
In the days leading up to her death, Tolbert had a chilling conversation with her sister, Monique, foreshadowing her own demise.
She ominously instructed her sister on how to plan her funeral, a plea that Monique initially dismissed but would soon tragically understand. This conversation, held just two days before the incident, highlighted the fear Tolbert was living with. Her sister later recounted that the seven-year relationship had been abusive from the beginning and that she had long feared for LaVentrice's safety.
On the night of September 24th, police were called to a residence on Kiser Road after reports of a shooting. Inside, they discovered LaVentrice Denise Tolbert, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Tony DeWayne Davis was also found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A witness at the home reported hearing the gunshot and then encountering Davis, who was holding a gun to his own head and stated he would not go back to jail.
Davis was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and died two days later. The investigation concluded that Davis shot and killed Tolbert before turning the gun on himself. Other family members were present in the house at the time of the shooting but were not physically harmed. The incident was officially classified as a domestic-related murder-suicide, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a woman remembered for her infectious smile and laughter.
