On March 3, 1928, Motorcycle Officer Elsie T. Lewis of the Birmingham Police Department was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop. Officer Lewis and his partner had stopped a vehicle occupied by two men for running a red light. As they approached, one of the suspects opened fire, killing Officer Lewis and wounding his partner.
