In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Mia Nickson was tragically cut short. On January 10, 2024, the young Black woman was found unresponsive in the driveway of her home on Green Crest Turn, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Police Department's East Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:45 a.m. following a report of a person shot.
Despite the efforts of Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel who arrived shortly after, Nickson was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation suggested that an unknown suspect or suspects had shot Mia while she was outside her residence before fleeing. In the time leading up to her death, Nickson had been active on social media, hosting a Facebook Live stream. During the broadcast, she was reportedly involved in a heated argument with a man who accused her of being a 'setup queen,' a term used to describe a woman who lures individuals into situations where they can be robbed or harmed. This online confrontation occurred just minutes before she was fatally shot.
For a period, the case remained without a suspect in custody, and Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama offered a cash reward for information. However, a significant development later occurred in the investigation. Damien Laron McDaniel III, a 22-year-old from Fairfield, was subsequently arrested and charged with the intentional murder of Mia Nickson. McDaniel's arrest was part of a broader investigation that linked him to a series of other violent crimes in the Birmingham area, including multiple other homicides. For the family and friends of Mia Nickson, the arrest marked a step towards potential closure in a case that began with a public and heated online dispute and ended in a fatal act of violence outside her home.
