On the evening of September 3, 2025, Aldorthia Burrell, an 82-year-old Black woman, was on the front porch of her home on Balsam Avenue in the Jones Valley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, with her daughter. What began as a peaceful evening was shattered by the sound of a nearby argument, followed by gunfire. A stray bullet pierced the glass of her front door, striking the beloved great-great-grandmother in the head.
Rushed to UAB Hospital, she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
Known as the matriarch of a large family, Burrell had just celebrated her 82nd birthday. She was remembered by loved ones as a fun-loving woman who was deeply devoted to her church and family, which included three children, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandchild. Her death, described as a senseless loss by the police chief, sparked outrage throughout the community and prompted calls for an end to the gun violence that had claimed an innocent life.
The investigation into Aldorthia Burrell's tragic death initially had few leads. In the days that followed, Crime Stoppers increased the reward for information to $10,000, hoping to encourage witnesses to come forward. The community's cooperation, coupled with a new investigative approach by Birmingham detectives, proved fruitful.
On September 16, 2025, the Birmingham Police Department announced a significant development in the case. A 17-year-old male was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting. Due to his age, the suspect's name was not publicly released. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail. Police officials stated that the arrest was the result of persistent teamwork between detectives and community members who were deeply impacted by the loss of the cherished matriarch.
