On September 23, 2016, 30-year-old Hason Amin "Jazz" Alford was found fatally shot in a room at the Kings Inn hotel in Birmingham, Alabama. Housekeeping staff discovered her body, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Alford, a transgender woman from North Carolina, was initially misgendered in early reports, but her sister, Toya Milan, also a transgender woman, later clarified her identity.
