On February 3, 1997, 35-year-old Hispanic female Yolanda Muniz Gutierrez and her 10-year-old daughter, Jessica Muniz, were found murdered in their Chicago apartment. A neighbor had noticed flames coming from the residence and alerted authorities. Firefighters discovered the bodies of both victims on a burned bed. Investigators quickly determined that the fire had been deliberately set using a liquid accelerant, and signs of restraint were observed on the child’s wrist.
Autopsies
revealed that 35-year-old Hispanic female Yolanda Muniz Gutierrez had suffered a deep incised wound to her neck, severing major arteries and muscles. Her body was extensively burned, and evidence suggested she had been sexually assaulted. Her daughter, Jessica, had also been sexually assaulted and sustained a nearly decapitating neck wound, along with other stab injuries. Forensic analysis found semen on Jessica’s body, and DNA testing later matched it to a known offender.
