On February 3, 1997, 35-year-old Hispanic female Yolanda Muniz Gutierrez and her 10-year-old daughter, Jessica Muniz, were found murdered in their Chicago apartment. A neighbor had noticed flames coming from the residence and alerted authorities. Firefighters discovered the bodies of both victims on a burned bed. Investigators quickly determined that the fire had been deliberately set using a liquid accelerant, and signs of restraint were observed on the child’s wrist.
