In March of 1990, the life of 18-year-old Robyn Mihan was tragically cut short. A young mother who had given birth to her second child just two weeks prior, she was found deceased in a desolate area near Silex, Missouri. Her body had been discarded between two mattresses, bound at her hands and feet. An autopsy would later reveal the cause of her death to be manual strangulation.
For years, the question of who was responsible for this brutal act remained unanswered, leaving a void in the lives of her loved ones.
The case grew cold, a painful lingering mystery for Mihan's family. It wasn't until decades later that a breakthrough would finally bring a semblance of justice. In 2022, advancements in DNA technology pointed investigators toward a man already behind bars for another murder: Gary Muehlberg. Already serving a life sentence for a 1993 killing, Muehlberg was confronted with the new evidence. In a stunning turn of events, the then 73-year-old inmate confessed not only to the murder of Robyn Mihan but also to the killings of several other women in the St. Louis area around the same period, earning him the moniker the 'Package Killer' for the way he disposed of his victims' bodies.
Muehlberg admitted to abducting Mihan from Cherokee Street in St. Louis, a known red-light district at the time. He recounted taking her to his home where he subjected her to days of horrific abuse before ultimately strangling her. Following his confession, Gary Muehlberg was charged with the murders of Robyn Mihan and three other women: Brenda Jean Pruitt, Sandy Little, and Donna Reitmeyer. He eventually pleaded guilty to these crimes and received multiple life sentences, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his days in prison. His confession brought a long-awaited, albeit somber, conclusion to a case that had haunted the St. Louis area for over three decades, finally providing answers to the families of his victims.
