The harrowing events began to unfold on December 6, 2024, when Gabriella was last seen in the Placid Bay subdivision of Westmoreland County, getting into a gray sedan with an unknown individual. This marked the beginning of a nearly two-month period of uncertainty and anguish for her family and friends. The search for Gabriella involved a multi-agency effort, with law enforcement from Westmoreland and Essex counties, the Tappahannock Police Department, and Virginia State Police, among others, tirelessly working to find her.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on January 28, 2025. Following a lead reportedly derived from information found on seized cellphones, investigators conducted an extensive search on a large tract of land near Church Hill and Desha roads in Essex County. It was there, just before noon, that the search party made a grim discovery: human remains that were later confirmed to be those of Gabriella Dawn Watkins. Some reports indicated that her body had been dismembered. The remains were sent to the Chief Medical Examiner for further examination to determine the cause and manner of her death.
In the wake of this tragic discovery, the investigation quickly led to arrests. Twenty-year-old Abraham Medina of Oak Grove was taken into custody in Westmoreland County and charged with one count of transporting, secreting, concealing, or altering a dead body. Authorities indicated that additional charges were pending as the investigation continued. Shortly after, a second suspect, 35-year-old Phillip Owens of Colonial Beach, was also arrested in connection with Gabriella's murder. He faced the same charge as Medina: one count of transporting, secreting, concealing, or altering a dead body, and was held without bond. The connection between the suspects and Gabriella was not immediately disclosed by law enforcement. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young woman whose life was filled with promise, as they awaited justice to be served in a case that had shaken their small town to its core.
