On the evening of January 9, 2025, a violent altercation in Manassas, Virginia, claimed the life of 22-year-old Calvin Tyshaun Odell Batson, a Black male from Woodbridge. The fatal encounter unfolded at approximately 6:19 p.m. in the 8300 block of Sunset Drive, where Prince William County Police responded to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, the scene was clear; those involved had already fled, and there were no immediate signs of injury.
The investigation soon led officers to a local hospital, where they learned that Batson was being treated for gunshot wounds. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. Detectives determined that two groups had been involved in a dispute that escalated into an exchange of gunfire. Following the shooting, both groups left the area in separate vehicles, with one transporting the wounded Batson to the hospital. Authorities have indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence.
In the days following the shooting, the Prince William County Police Department identified a suspect in the case. Marlon Osvaldo Bautista, a 20-year-old from Manassas Park, was identified as the individual believed to have fatally shot Batson during the altercation. On January 13, 2025, Bautista was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
