John 'Jack' Miller, a 75-year-old retired Suffolk County police detective, was shot and killed in his Dix Hills, New York, home on March 19, 2025. The tragic events unfolded just a day after Miller had filed a missing person's report for his 43-year-old son, Christopher Miller. The series of events leading to the fatal shooting began when Christopher was involved in a car accident and hospitalized. Unaware of his son's whereabouts, John Miller contacted the police to report him missing.
An officer subsequently informed him that his son was at the hospital.
The following morning, after his father had brought him home, Christopher Miller was found hiding in a neighbor's shed. When police escorted him back to his residence on Bruno Lane, they discovered the body of his father. Investigators determined that John 'Jack' Miller had been shot multiple times with a shotgun during an altercation with his son in their kitchen. His son, Christopher, allegedly retrieved the shotgun from his room before the fatal confrontation.
Christopher Miller was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors stated that he admitted to shooting his father, including a final shot to 'finish him off.' Following his arrest, Christopher Miller was indicted on the murder charge and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. He was remanded to Suffolk County jail without bail.
